Amos 6

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

They celebrate victories taken by their own strength just as a nation is raised up to oppress them, and their boast has scarcely left the air before the reversal arrives.

Ease, music, and the ruin of Josephvv. 1–7

The comfortable distinguish themselves in Zion and on Mount Samaria, while the house of Israel comes to them. They are invited to inspect Calneh, great Hamath, and Gath, as though a tour of fallen kingdoms might interrupt their confidence. It does not: they lounge on ivory beds, feast on lambs and calves, improvise like David, drink by the bowlful, and anoint themselves with the finest oils. The odd little sting is that all this splendour sits beside the ruin of Joseph, which they do not grieve. Therefore the first of the captives will be these very feasters, and the lounging will stop.

Houses, impossible farming, and the approaching nationvv. 8–14

The LORD swears that Jacob’s pride and citadels are detestable, and the scene contracts from citadels to one house with ten men left in it. A relative comes to burn the bodies; an answer of “None” is followed by “Silence,” since even the name of the LORD must not be invoked. Great houses will be smashed and small houses reduced to rubble. Then come the splendidly impossible questions: horses on cliffs, oxen plowing the sea. The impossibility is the point of comparison for justice turned into poison and righteousness into wormwood. Israel rejoices in Lo-debar and claims Karnaim, but a nation will oppress the house of Israel from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of the Arabah.

  1. Amos 6:1Woe to those at ease in Zion and those secure on Mount Samaria, the distinguished ones of the foremost nation, to whom the house of Israel comes.

  2. Amos 6:2Cross over to Calneh and see; go from there to the great Hamath; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Is their territory larger than yours?

  3. Amos 6:3You dismiss the day of calamity and bring near a reign of violence.

  4. Amos 6:4You lie on beds inlaid with ivory, and lounge upon your couches. You dine on lambs from the flock and calves from the stall.

  5. Amos 6:5You improvise songs on the harp like David and invent your own musical instruments.

  6. Amos 6:6You drink wine by the bowlful and anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you fail to grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

  7. Amos 6:7Therefore, you will now go into exile as the first of the captives, and your feasting and lounging will come to an end.

  8. Amos 6:8The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself—the LORD, the God of Hosts, has declared: “I abhor Jacob’s pride and detest his citadels, so I will deliver up the city and everything in it.”

  9. Amos 6:9And if there are ten men left in one house, they too will die.

  10. Amos 6:10And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be invoked.”

  11. Amos 6:11For the LORD gives a command: “The great house will be smashed to pieces, and the small house to rubble.”

  12. Amos 6:12“Do horses gallop on the cliffs? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood—

  13. Amos 6:13you who rejoice in Lo-debar and say, ‘Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?’

  14. Amos 6:14For behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD, the God of Hosts, “and they will oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of the Arabah.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
