Description

Who was Omri?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Omri was the sixth king of Israel, who reigned for 12 years (1Ki.16.23). He came to power after a period of political instability and established Samaria as the new capital of Israel (1Ki.16.24). Omri was a powerful ruler who expanded Israel's territory and made alliances with neighboring kingdoms, including Phoenicia through the marriage of his son Ahab to Jezebel (1Ki.16.31). However, Omri did evil in the eyes of the Lord and followed the sins of Jeroboam (1Ki.16.25-26). The dynasty he founded, known as the "house of Omri," became notorious for its wickedness, particularly during the reign of his son Ahab (1Ki.16.30; Mic.6.16). Omri's reign was significant in the history of Israel, as he strengthened the kingdom politically and economically, but also led the nation further into idolatry and disobedience to God.

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

How the graph connects Omri8 of 8 entities the graph connects to Omri, in 3 groups: kinship 1, company 1, events 6. Kinship, company and ground are stated relations; events counts the acts two entities stand in together and is not a relation. Each mark is sized by how many verses name that entity and labelled with the link and the count, so the grouping and the size are both readable without colour. Distance from the centre carries nothing.AhabFather of · 1 event · 79 versesKinshipAhab’s reignTook part in · 2 versesCompanyIsrael5 events · 2,578 versesSamaria3 events · 124 versesJeroboam1 event · 81 versesTirzah2 events · 13 versesGibbethon1 event · 5 versesShemer1 event · 1 verseEventsOmri

Where this happens

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Where the story of Omri happensAll 3 places the claims about Omri reach, on a map of the world the text moves through, framed to them: Samaria, Gibbethon, Tirzah. Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Omri there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.SamariaGibbethon
