Description

Who was Amraphel?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Amraphel was the king of Shinar (Babylonia) during the time of Abraham. He was one of the four kings who formed an alliance with Chedorlaomer, king of Elam, in a battle against the five kings of the cities of the Plain, including Sodom and Gomorrah. The four kings, led by Chedorlaomer, emerged victorious in this conflict. Some scholars have suggested that Amraphel might be an alternate name for Hammurabi, the famous Babylonian king, but this identification remains uncertain.

Places

Where this happens

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Where the story of Amraphel happensThe one place the claims about Amraphel reach, on a map of the world the text moves through, framed to them: Shinar. Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Amraphel there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.Shinar
