Psalms 131

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

David quiets his soul by comparing it twice to a weaned child with its mother—a remarkably domestic picture for a psalm that ends by addressing an entire nation.

A quiet soul, then a wider hopevv. 1–3

David begins with a refusal of hauteur: his heart is not proud, his eyes are not haughty, and he does not reach after matters too lofty for him. Then comes the psalm's tender oddity: the soul has been stilled and quieted, and is “like a weaned child with his mother,” a comparison immediately repeated, as though once were not quite enough. The final movement opens outward from David's quiet soul to Israel, summoned to put its hope in the LORD now and forevermore.

  1. Ps 131:1A song of ascents. Of David. My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty. I do not aspire to great things or matters too lofty for me.

  2. Ps 131:2Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.

  3. Ps 131:3O Israel, put your hope in the LORD, both now and forevermore.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
