The proposed escape route is a bird’s flight to a mountain, while the speaker has already declared the LORD his refuge.

A bird to the mountainvv. 1–3

The counsel begins briskly: flee, fly, get to the mountain. Yet the speaker answers with a question sharp enough to stop the packing of bags: refuge has already been found in the LORD. The danger is real enough—the wicked have bows, arrows, shadows, and the upright in their sights. Then comes the great architectural worry: if the foundations go, what remains for the righteous to do? The psalm leaves that question hanging in the air, which is a remarkably economical way of making the floor feel unstable.

The throne above the troublevv. 4–7

The unanswered question is followed not by a strategy but by a change of altitude. The LORD is in His holy temple and on His heavenly throne; from there His eyes examine the sons of men. Righteous and wicked alike are tested, while the lover of violence meets a rain of fiery coals, sulfur, and scorching wind—a grim forecast with unusually vivid weather. The final movement belongs to justice: the LORD loves it, and the upright will see His face.
