The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A spear enters a tent beside the Tent of Meeting while Israel weeps outside; it leaves behind a plague halted, 24,000 dead, and a “covenant of peace” for the spearman.

A tent beside the mourningvv. 1–9

At Shittim, Israel falls in with the daughters of Moab, their sacrifices, and Baal of Peor. The LORD’s anger burns, and Moses tells Israel’s judges to kill those who joined the worship. Then, with the congregation weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, an Israelite brings a Midianite woman before them. Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, takes a spear, follows them into the tent, and drives it through both. The plague stops; the tally of the dead is 24,000.

Peace, priesthood, and a command against Midianvv. 10–18

The LORD names Phinehas as the one who turned His wrath away from Israel and grants him a covenant of peace: not merely peace, but a permanent priesthood for him and his descendants. The slain Israelite is identified as Zimri son of Salu, leader of a Simeonite family; the slain woman is Cozbi, daughter of Zur, a Midianite tribal chief. Then the chapter turns its spear outward: Moses is told to attack the Midianites, because Peor and Cozbi are counted as their deceitful assault on Israel.

  1. Num 25:1While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with the daughters of Moab,

  2. Num 25:2who also invited them to the sacrifices for their gods. And the people ate and bowed down to these gods.

  3. Num 25:3So Israel joined in worshiping Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD burned against them.

  4. Num 25:4Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that His fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”

  5. Num 25:5So Moses told the judges of Israel, “Each of you must kill all of his men who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.”

  6. Num 25:6Just then an Israelite man brought to his family a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and the whole congregation of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

  7. Num 25:7On seeing this, Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,

  8. Num 25:8followed the Israelite into the tent, and drove the spear through both of them—through the Israelite and on through the belly of the woman. So the plague against the Israelites was halted,

  9. Num 25:9but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.

  10. Num 25:10Then the LORD said to Moses,

  11. Num 25:11“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the Israelites; for he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in My zeal.

  12. Num 25:12Declare, therefore, that I am granting him My covenant of peace.

  13. Num 25:13It will be a covenant of permanent priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”

  14. Num 25:14The name of the Israelite who was slain with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.

  15. Num 25:15And the name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.

  16. Num 25:16And the LORD said to Moses,

  17. Num 25:17“Attack the Midianites and strike them dead.

  18. Num 25:18For they assailed you deceitfully when they seduced you in the matter of Peor and their sister Cozbi, the daughter of the Midianite leader, the woman who was killed on the day the plague came because of Peor.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
