The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A daughter sets the purification clock to exactly twice the length prescribed after a son: two weeks and sixty-six days instead of seven days and thirty-three. The chapter gives the numbers with great precision and gives no reason for the difference.

The two clocks and the offeringsvv. 1–8

The LORD tells Moses to give Israel a rule for childbirth. After a son, the woman is unclean for seven days, and on the eighth day the boy is circumcised; after that, her purification continues for thirty-three days. After a daughter, the first period becomes two weeks and the second sixty-six days. During the continuing purification she must not touch anything sacred or enter the sanctuary. When the days are complete, she brings a year-old lamb and a young pigeon or turtledove to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. If a lamb is beyond her means, the chapter makes the arrangement pleasantly exact: two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for each offering. The priest presents them before the LORD, makes atonement for her, and she is clean.

  1. Lev 12:1Then the LORD said to Moses,

  2. Lev 12:2“Say to the Israelites, ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be unclean for seven days, as she is during the days of her menstruation.

  3. Lev 12:3And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin is to be circumcised.

  4. Lev 12:4The woman shall continue in purification from her bleeding for thirty-three days. She must not touch anything sacred or go into the sanctuary until the days of her purification are complete.

  5. Lev 12:5If, however, she gives birth to a daughter, the woman will be unclean for two weeks as she is during her menstruation. Then she must continue in purification from her bleeding for sixty-six days.

  6. Lev 12:6When the days of her purification are complete, whether for a son or for a daughter, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering.

  7. Lev 12:7And the priest will present them before the LORD and make atonement for her; and she shall be ceremonially cleansed from her flow of blood. This is the law for a woman giving birth, whether to a male or to a female.

  8. Lev 12:8But if she cannot afford a lamb, she shall bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. Then the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
