Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
At Pharaoh’s birthday feast, “lifting up the heads” proves to be a phrase with two violently different endings: one official is restored, and the other is hanged.
Two dreams in the same prisonvv. 1–19
The king’s cupbearer and baker offend Pharaoh and arrive in the prison where Joseph is confined, placed under Joseph’s care by the captain of the guard. One night they dream, each dream carrying its own meaning, and Joseph finds them “distraught” in the morning. He invites the dreams, on the sound principle that interpretations belong to God. The cupbearer’s vine, three branches, and Pharaoh’s cup promise restoration within three days; Joseph, sensibly enough, adds a request that he be remembered. The baker, seeing that the first interpretation was favorable, presents three baskets of bread—and receives a prediction involving a tree and birds. The dream consultation has become a most hazardous queue.
The birthday feast and the forgotten manvv. 20–23
On the third day, Pharaoh’s birthday supplies the appointed feast and the appointed verdict. He lifts up the heads of both officials, restoring the cupbearer to his post and hanging the baker exactly as Joseph had said. The cup returns to Pharaoh’s hand; Joseph’s name does not return to Pharaoh’s ear. The chief cupbearer, having been asked to remember, forgets all about him—a tiny administrative detail with the weight of a prison door.

Gen 40:1Some time later, the king’s cupbearer and baker offended their master, the king of Egypt.
Gen 40:2Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,
Gen 40:3and imprisoned them in the house of the captain of the guard, the same prison where Joseph was confined.
Gen 40:4The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he became their personal attendant. After they had been in custody for some time,
Gen 40:5both of these men—the Egyptian king’s cupbearer and baker, who were being held in the prison—had a dream on the same night, and each dream had its own meaning.
Gen 40:6When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were distraught.
Gen 40:7So he asked the officials of Pharaoh who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why are your faces so downcast today?”
Gen 40:8“We both had dreams,” they replied, “but there is no one to interpret them.” Then Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
Gen 40:9So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream: “In my dream there was a vine before me,
Gen 40:10and on the vine were three branches. As it budded, its blossoms opened and its clusters ripened into grapes.
Gen 40:11Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into his cup, and placed the cup in his hand.”
Gen 40:12Joseph replied, “This is the interpretation: The three branches are three days.
Gen 40:13Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore your position. You will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you did when you were his cupbearer.
Gen 40:14But when it goes well for you, please remember me and show me kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh, that he might bring me out of this prison.
Gen 40:15For I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing for which they should have put me in this dungeon.”
Gen 40:16When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was favorable, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: There were three baskets of white bread on my head.
Gen 40:17In the top basket were all sorts of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”
Gen 40:18Joseph replied, “This is the interpretation: The three baskets are three days.
Gen 40:19Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and hang you on a tree. Then the birds will eat the flesh of your body.”
Gen 40:20On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he held a feast for all his officials, and in their presence he lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.
Gen 40:21Pharaoh restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.
Gen 40:22But Pharaoh hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had described to them in his interpretation.
Gen 40:23The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot all about him.

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
