The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A man with a writing kit is sent through a city marked for slaughter, while the killing is ordered to begin at the sanctuary itself.

The mark and the slaughtervv. 1–7

Six men arrive from the north with weapons of slaughter, accompanied by a linen-clad man carrying a writing kit. The glory of the God of Israel moves to the temple threshold and sends the linen-clad man through Jerusalem to mark the foreheads of those sighing over its abominations. The others are told to follow, spare no age or sex, and begin at the sanctuary; the elders before the temple therefore receive the first of the violence. The courts are to be filled with the slain—a grim use for a courtyard, and a remarkably direct instruction to the executioners.

The question and the reportvv. 8–11

While the killing continues, Ezekiel is left alone and falls facedown, asking whether the entire remnant of Israel will be destroyed. The reply names bloodshed, perversity, and the belief that the LORD has forsaken the land and does not see; pity and sparing are refused, and deeds are brought back upon their heads. Then the man in linen returns with the shortest possible completion report: the writing kit has done its work.

  1. Ezek 9:1Then I heard Him call out in a loud voice, saying, “Draw near, O executioners of the city, each with a weapon of destruction in hand.”

  2. Ezek 9:2And I saw six men coming from the direction of the Upper Gate, which faces north, each with a weapon of slaughter in his hand. With them was another man clothed in linen who had a writing kit at his side. And they came in and stood beside the bronze altar.

  3. Ezek 9:3Then the glory of the God of Israel rose from above the cherubim, where it had been, and moved to the threshold of the temple. And He called to the man clothed in linen who had the writing kit at his side.

  4. Ezek 9:4“Go throughout the city of Jerusalem,” said the LORD, “and put a mark on the foreheads of the men sighing and groaning over all the abominations committed there.”

  5. Ezek 9:5And as I listened, He said to the others, “Follow him through the city and start killing; do not show pity or spare anyone!

  6. Ezek 9:6Slaughter the old men, the young men and maidens, the women and children; but do not go near anyone who has the mark. Now begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the temple.

  7. Ezek 9:7Then He told them, “Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain. Go forth!” So they went out and began killing throughout the city.

  8. Ezek 9:8While they were killing, I was left alone. And I fell facedown and cried out, “Oh, Lord GOD, when You pour out Your wrath on Jerusalem, will You destroy the entire remnant of Israel?”

  9. Ezek 9:9He replied, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great. The land is full of bloodshed, and the city is full of perversity. For they say, ‘The LORD has forsaken the land; the LORD does not see.’

  10. Ezek 9:10But as for Me, I will not look on them with pity, nor will I spare them. I will bring their deeds down upon their own heads.”

  11. Ezek 9:11Then the man clothed in linen with the writing kit at his side reported back, “I have done as You commanded.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
