Ezekiel 14

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The LORD entices a prophet to speak, then destroys him for speaking, and gives him the same punishment as the inquirer.

The elders and the dangerous consultationvv. 1–11

The elders of Israel sit before the prophet, and the word of the LORD arrives with a question that is hardly an invitation to tea: these men have idols in their hearts and stumbling blocks before their faces. The inquirer is answered according to his idolatry; the prophet, meanwhile, may be enticed to speak and then destroyed for doing so. It is an unusually exact arrangement: inquirer and prophet bear the same punishment, while the house of Israel is called back from its idols.

Three men against a ruined landvv. 12–20

The scene widens from a room of elders to a land under judgment. Famine, wild beasts, sword, and plague are each brought forward in turn, and each time Noah, Daniel, and Job are placed within the land like three very distinguished names on an otherwise hopeless guest list. Yet their righteousness reaches only themselves; not the land, and not even their sons and daughters.

Jerusalem and the consolation of survivorsvv. 21–23

Then the four judgments arrive together at Jerusalem: sword, famine, wild beasts, and plague. Some sons and daughters are nevertheless brought out, and their conduct and actions are called a consolation concerning the disaster itself. The chapter leaves that consolation standing beside the ruin, an odd and solemn companion.

  1. Ezek 14:1Then some of the elders of Israel came and sat down before me.

  2. Ezek 14:2And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

  3. Ezek 14:3“Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I consult with them in any way?

  4. Ezek 14:4Therefore speak to them and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘When any Israelite sets up idols in his heart and puts a wicked stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet, I the LORD will answer him according to his great idolatry,

  5. Ezek 14:5so that I may take hold of the hearts of the people of Israel. For because of their idols, they are all estranged from Me.’

  6. Ezek 14:6Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Repent and turn away from your idols; turn your faces away from all your abominations.

  7. Ezek 14:7For when any Israelite or any foreigner dwelling in Israel separates himself from Me, sets up idols in his heart, and puts a wicked stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet to inquire of Me, I the LORD will answer him Myself.

  8. Ezek 14:8I will set My face against that man and make him a sign and a proverb; I will cut him off from among My people. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

  9. Ezek 14:9But if the prophet is enticed to speak a message, then it was I the LORD who enticed him, and I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel.

  10. Ezek 14:10They will bear their punishment—the punishment of the inquirer will be the same as that of the prophet—

  11. Ezek 14:11in order that the house of Israel may no longer stray from Me and no longer defile themselves with all their transgressions. Then they will be My people and I will be their God, declares the Lord GOD.’”

  12. Ezek 14:12And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

  13. Ezek 14:13“Son of man, if a land sins against Me by acting unfaithfully, and I stretch out My hand against it to cut off its supply of food, to send famine upon it, and to cut off from it both man and beast,

  14. Ezek 14:14then even if these three men—Noah, Daniel, and Job—were in it, their righteousness could deliver only themselves, declares the Lord GOD.

  15. Ezek 14:15Or if I send wild beasts through the land to leave it childless and desolate, with no man passing through it for fear of the beasts,

  16. Ezek 14:16then as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, even if these three men were in it, they could not deliver their own sons or daughters. They alone would be delivered, but the land would be desolate.

  17. Ezek 14:17Or if I bring a sword against that land and say, ‘Let a sword pass through it,’ so that I cut off from it both man and beast,

  18. Ezek 14:18then as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, even if these three men were in it, they could not deliver their own sons or daughters. They alone would be delivered.

  19. Ezek 14:19Or if I send a plague into that land and pour out My wrath upon it through bloodshed, cutting off from it both man and beast,

  20. Ezek 14:20then as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, they could not deliver their own sons or daughters. Their righteousness could deliver only themselves.

  21. Ezek 14:21For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem My four dire judgments—sword, famine, wild beasts, and plague—in order to cut off from it both man and beast?

  22. Ezek 14:22Yet, behold, some survivors will be left in it—sons and daughters who will be brought out. They will come out to you, and when you see their conduct and actions, you will be comforted regarding the disaster I have brought upon Jerusalem—all that I have brought upon it.

  23. Ezek 14:23They will bring you consolation when you see their conduct and actions, and you will know that it was not without cause that I have done all these things within it,’ declares the Lord GOD.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
