The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Jabez was named for pain, asked God to enlarge his territory and keep him from harm, and received exactly what he asked for—an unusually brisk conclusion to a family record.

A name with a request attachedvv. 1–10

Judah’s descendants begin in a steady procession of fathers, sons, clans, and the occasional sister. Then Jabez steps out of the list: his mother gave him a painful name, and he answered it with a prayer for blessing, territory, protection, and freedom from pain. God granted the request, and the genealogy briefly behaves like a story.

Families, wives, and craftsmenvv. 11–23

The names continue, though the chapter pauses for a particularly striking household: Bithiah, Pharaoh’s daughter, bears children to Mered, and Mered also takes a Judean wife, whose children are given in turn with their fathers’ and towns’ names. Elsewhere, craftsmen give Ge-harashim its name, linen workers appear at Beth-ashbea, and potters live at Netaim and Gederah in the king’s service. A genealogy, it turns out, has room for tradesmen and royal daughters alike.

Pasture at the edge of the recordvv. 24–43

The descendants of Simeon are listed with their cities, villages, and surrounding settlements. Shimei has sixteen sons and six daughters, yet his wider clan does not become as numerous as Judah’s—a small arithmetic mystery left standing in the open. Later, Simeonite leaders seek pasture, find a spacious and peaceful land, attack the people living there in the days of Hezekiah, and settle in their place; five hundred then go to Mount Seir and strike down the Amalekite remnant. The final sentence is wonderfully unceremonious: they have lived there to this day.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
