Description

Who was Tobiah?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Tobiah, described as an Ammonite official, was one of the main opponents of Nehemiah during the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem (Neh.2.10, 19; 4.3, 7; 6.1, 12, 14, 17, 19; 13.4, 7, 8). Along with Sanballat the Horonite and Geshem the Arab, Tobiah mocked and threatened Nehemiah and the Jews, trying to discourage and intimidate them from completing the work. Tobiah had close ties with some of the Jewish nobles, who kept him informed about Nehemiah's activities (Neh.6.17-19). He even had a room in the temple courts, which Nehemiah later cleared out (Neh.13.4-8). Despite the opposition and threats, Nehemiah persevered in rebuilding the walls, trusting in God's protection and strength. Tobiah's actions demonstrate the political and social challenges faced by Nehemiah in his efforts to restore Jerusalem and reform the Jewish community.

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

How the graph connects Tobiah9 of 9 entities the graph connects to Tobiah, in 3 groups: kinship 2, company 4, events 3. Kinship, company and ground are stated relations; events counts the acts two entities stand in together and is not a relation. Each mark is sized by how many verses name that entity and labelled with the link and the count, so the grouping and the size are both readable without colour. Distance from the centre carries nothing.daughter of ShecaniahSpouse of · 1 verseJehohananFather of · 1 verseKinshipAmmonAssociated with · 123 versesEliashibAssociated with · 1 event · 2 versesEliashib’s preparation of RoomTook part in · 2 versesTobiah and Sanballat’s hiring of ShemaiahTook part in · 2 versesCompanySanballat6 events · 10 versesGeshem3 events · 4 versesShemaiah1 event · 1 verseEventsTobiah

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Where the story of Tobiah happensThe one place the claims about Tobiah reach, on a map of the world the text moves through, framed to them: Ammon. Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Tobiah there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.Ammon
