Description

Who was Rahab?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Rahab was a Canaanite woman who lived in Jericho at the time of the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land (Jos.2.1). She is described as a prostitute who provided lodging for the two Israelite spies sent by Joshua to survey the city. When the king of Jericho ordered Rahab to hand over the spies, she hid them on her roof and misdirected the king's men (Jos.2.3-7). Rahab acknowledged the God of Israel and asked for protection for herself and her family when the city would be taken (Jos.2.8-13). The spies agreed to spare her if she would tie a scarlet cord in her window (Jos.2.14-21). During the conquest of Jericho, Rahab and her family were saved as promised (Jos.6.17, 23, 25). Rahab's faith and actions are commended in the New Testament (Heb.11.31; Jam 2.25). She is also mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus, indicating that she married Salmon and became an ancestor of King David and Jesus Christ (Mat.1.5).

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

How the graph connects Rahab7 of 7 entities the graph connects to Rahab, in 3 groups: kinship 2, company 1, events 4. Kinship, company and ground are stated relations; events counts the acts two entities stand in together and is not a relation. Each mark is sized by how many verses name that entity and labelled with the link and the count, so the grouping and the size are both readable without colour. Distance from the centre carries nothing.BoazMother of · 23 versesSalmonSpouse of · 6 versesKinshipTwo Spies’ coming of The LandTook part in · 3 versesCompanyIsrael1 event · 2,578 versesJoshua1 event · 189 versesFaith1 event · 146 versesJericho1 event · 61 versesEventsRahab

Where this happens

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Where the story of Rahab happensThe one place the claims about Rahab reach, on a map of the world the text moves through, framed to them: Jericho. Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Rahab there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.Jericho
