Description

Who was Elisha?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Elisha was a prophet in Israel who succeeded Elijah (1Ki.19.16). He was the son of Shaphat and was from Abel-meholah (1Ki.19.16,19). Elisha became Elijah's servant and disciple after Elijah threw his cloak around him while he was plowing (1Ki.19.19). When Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elisha took up his cloak and received a double portion of his spirit (2Ki.2.9-13). Elisha performed many miracles, including parting the Jordan River (2Ki.2.14), purifying water (2Ki.2.19-22), multiplying a widow's oil (2Ki.4.1-7), raising a Shunammite woman's son from the dead (2Ki.4.8-37), and healing Naaman's leprosy (2Ki.5). He also prophesied and gave counsel to kings, such as Jehoshaphat and Joram (2Ki.3). Elisha's ministry spanned the reigns of several kings of Israel, including Joram, Jehu, Jehoahaz, and Joash (2Ki.2-13). He died during the reign of King Joash (2Ki.13.14-20). Jesus mentioned Elisha as an example of a prophet who was sent to heal a foreigner, Naaman the Syrian (Luk.4.27).

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

How the graph connects Elisha10 of 21 entities the graph connects to Elisha, in 3 groups: company 1, ground 2, events 7. Kinship, company and ground are stated relations; events counts the acts two entities stand in together and is not a relation. Each mark is sized by how many verses name that entity and labelled with the link and the count, so the grouping and the size are both readable without colour. Distance from the centre carries nothing.JoramAssociated with · 19 versesCompanyIsraelLocated in · 2,578 versesJerichoLocated in · 3 events · 61 versesGroundGoing2 events · 333 versesJordan2 events · 179 versesSamaria2 events · 124 versesElijah15 events · 92 versesBethel3 events · 69 versesDamascus2 events · 55 versesHazael5 events · 21 versesEventsElisha

Where this happens

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Elisha there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.JerichoBethelCarmel_MountDamascusAbel-meholahDothanSamariaShunem
