The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The resistance is arranged as the road to ruin: the LORD hardens the kings’ hearts so that they will fight Israel, receive no mercy, and be destroyed. It is a grimly efficient invitation to battle.

The armies at Meromvv. 1–9

Jabin king of Hazor gathers a remarkable catalogue of allies, sending word to Jobab, the kings of Madon, Shimron, and Achshaph, and the rulers scattered through mountains, foothills, valleys, and the coast. They arrive with armies like beach sand, horses, and chariots, and settle at the waters of Merom. The LORD tells Joshua not to fear them and gives a particularly unusual instruction for the victorious army: hamstring the horses and burn the chariots. Joshua attacks suddenly, pursues the defeated host to Sidon, Misrephoth-maim, and the Valley of Mizpeh, and then carries out the order precisely.

Hazor, alone among the moundsvv. 10–20

Joshua turns back to Hazor, once the head of the northern kingdoms, captures it, kills its king, and burns the city itself. The other cities are captured and their kings put to the sword, but their mounds are not burned. Hazor is the conspicuous exception: destruction reaches its people, its plunder is taken, and its buildings go up in flames. The campaign then stretches across the entire region, from Mount Halak towards Seir to Baal-gad at the foot of Mount Hermon. The fighting lasts a long time; no city makes peace except the Hivites of Gibeon. The reason given is as stark as the outcome: the LORD hardens the remaining hearts so that battle, rather than peace, will bring about their destruction.

The last Anakim and the land at restvv. 21–23

Joshua next eliminates the Anakim from the hill country of Hebron, Debir, and Anab, and from the hill country of Judah and Israel. Yet the sentence is not quite absolute: survivors remain in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod, three small names left standing at the edge of a sweeping claim. Joshua has taken the land, allotted it to Israel’s tribes, and the land finally has rest from war.

  1. Josh 11:1Now when Jabin king of Hazor heard about these things, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon; to the kings of Shimron and Achshaph;

  2. Josh 11:2to the kings of the north in the mountains, in the Arabah south of Chinnereth, in the foothills, and in Naphoth-dor to the west;

  3. Josh 11:3to the Canaanites in the east and west; to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites in the hill country; and to the Hivites at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

  4. Josh 11:4So these kings came out with all their armies, a multitude as numerous as the sand on the seashore, along with a great number of horses and chariots.

  5. Josh 11:5All these kings joined forces and encamped at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

  6. Josh 11:6Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for by this time tomorrow I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You are to hamstring their horses and burn up their chariots.”

  7. Josh 11:7So by the waters of Merom, Joshua and his whole army came upon them suddenly and attacked them,

  8. Josh 11:8and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who struck them down and pursued them all the way to Greater Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. They struck them down, leaving no survivors.

  9. Josh 11:9Joshua treated them as the LORD had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned up their chariots.

  10. Josh 11:10At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword, because Hazor was formerly the head of all these kingdoms.

  11. Josh 11:11The Israelites put everyone in Hazor to the sword, devoting them to destruction. Nothing that breathed remained, and Joshua burned down Hazor itself.

  12. Josh 11:12Joshua captured all these kings and their cities and put them to the sword. He devoted them to destruction, as Moses the LORD’s servant had commanded.

  13. Josh 11:13Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds, except Hazor, which Joshua burned.

  14. Josh 11:14The Israelites took for themselves all the plunder and livestock of these cities, but they put all the people to the sword until they had completely destroyed them, not sparing anyone who breathed.

  15. Josh 11:15As the LORD had commanded His servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua. That is what Joshua did, leaving nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.

  16. Josh 11:16So Joshua took this entire region: the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the western foothills, the Arabah, and the mountains of Israel and their foothills,

  17. Josh 11:17from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon at the foot of Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings and struck them down, putting them to death.

  18. Josh 11:18Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long period of time.

  19. Josh 11:19No city made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites living in Gibeon; all others were taken in battle.

  20. Josh 11:20For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts to engage Israel in battle, so that they would be set apart for destruction and would receive no mercy, being annihilated as the LORD had commanded Moses.

  21. Josh 11:21At that time Joshua proceeded to eliminate the Anakim from the hill country of Hebron, Debir, and Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah and of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction, along with their cities.

  22. Josh 11:22No Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites; only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod did any survive.

  23. Josh 11:23So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the LORD had spoken to Moses. And Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to the allotments to their tribes. Then the land had rest from war.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
