Jonah is told to go to Nineveh, buys a passage in the opposite direction, sleeps through a storm, and ends up inside a great fish—a remarkably busy day for a man trying to get away.

A journey in the wrong directionvv. 1–3

The word of the LORD comes to Jonah son of Amittai with a commission for Nineveh. Jonah rises, certainly, but his feet take him down to Joppa, where he pays for a ship to Tarshish and sails away from the presence of the LORD. The destination is repeated, as though the voyage might become more convincing by saying it twice.

The sleeper in the lowest partvv. 4–10

The LORD hurls a great wind upon the sea, and the ship is in danger of breaking apart. The sailors pray to their own gods and throw out the cargo, while Jonah goes down to the lowest part of the vessel and falls into a deep sleep. The captain must wake him and ask him to call upon his God; then the sailors cast lots, and the lot falls on Jonah. His answer—that he worships the God who made both sea and dry land—does not calm anyone down.

Overboard, and then belowvv. 11–17

As the sea grows worse, Jonah says that the sailors must cast him into it. They try rowing back to dry land first, which is decent of them and entirely unsuccessful. After praying that they will not be charged with innocent blood, they cast Jonah overboard; the sea grows calm, the men fear the LORD, offer a sacrifice, and make vows. Then, with no ceremony at all, the LORD appoints a great fish to swallow Jonah, who spends three days and three nights in its belly.

  1. Jonah 1:1Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,

  2. Jonah 1:2“Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.”

  3. Jonah 1:3Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went aboard to sail for Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.

  4. Jonah 1:4Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship was in danger of breaking apart.

  5. Jonah 1:5The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

  6. Jonah 1:6The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”

  7. Jonah 1:7“Come!” said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity that is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

  8. Jonah 1:8“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to blame for this calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”

  9. Jonah 1:9“I am a Hebrew,” replied Jonah. “I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”

  10. Jonah 1:10Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What have you done?” The men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

  11. Jonah 1:11Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”

  12. Jonah 1:12“Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down for you. For I know that I am to blame for this violent storm that has come upon you.”

  13. Jonah 1:13Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea was raging against them more and more.

  14. Jonah 1:14So they cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”

  15. Jonah 1:15Then they picked up Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the raging sea grew calm.

  16. Jonah 1:16Then the men feared the LORD greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to Him.

  17. Jonah 1:17Now the LORD had appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of the fish.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
