Hosea 1

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Hosea is told to build a family whose names will announce the fate of a kingdom—and then, almost at once, the last child’s name is answered by a promise of countless children.

A household made into an oraclevv. 1–5

The word comes to Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah over Judah, and Jeroboam son of Jehoash over Israel. The LORD’s first instruction is startlingly domestic: Hosea is to marry Gomer daughter of Diblaim and have children whose family story will speak of the land’s departure from the LORD. Their son is named Jezreel, because bloodshed will come upon the house of Jehu, Israel’s kingdom will end, and its bow will be broken in the Valley of Jezreel.

Names of refusal, names of abundancevv. 6–11

Gomer bears a daughter, Lo-ruhamah, whose name declares that compassion for Israel has ended, though Judah will be saved without bow, sword, war, horses, or cavalry. After Lo-ruhamah is weaned, another son arrives, Lo-ammi: “not My people.” Yet the chapter will not leave the sentence there. Israel will become beyond counting, called sons of the living God in the very place where the rejection was spoken; Judah and Israel will gather under one leader, and the day of Jezreel will be great.

  1. Hos 1:1This is the word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and of Jeroboam son of Jehoash, king of Israel.

  2. Hos 1:2When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, He told him, “Go, take a prostitute as your wife and have children of adultery, because this land is flagrantly prostituting itself by departing from the LORD.”

  3. Hos 1:3So Hosea went and married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

  4. Hos 1:4Then the LORD said to Hosea, “Name him Jezreel, for soon I will bring the bloodshed of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel.

  5. Hos 1:5And on that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.”

  6. Hos 1:6Gomer again conceived and gave birth to a daughter, and the LORD said to Hosea, “Name her Lo-ruhamah, for I will no longer have compassion on the house of Israel, that I should ever forgive them.

  7. Hos 1:7Yet I will have compassion on the house of Judah, and I will save them—not by bow or sword or war, not by horses and cavalry, but by the LORD their God.”

  8. Hos 1:8After she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, Gomer conceived and gave birth to a son.

  9. Hos 1:9And the LORD said, “Name him Lo-ammi, for you are not My people, and I am not your God.

  10. Hos 1:10Yet the number of the Israelites will be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or counted. And it will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people,’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’

  11. Hos 1:11Then the people of Judah and of Israel will be gathered together, and they will appoint for themselves one leader, and will go up out of the land. For great will be the day of Jezreel.’’

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
