Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, and their folly will eventually be plain to everyone.

The grand parade of terrible timesvv. 1–9

The last days arrive with a remarkably crowded catalogue of vices: self-love, money-love, boastfulness, brutality, recklessness, pleasure-seeking, and a form of godliness that has misplaced its power. Such people worm into households and capture the vulnerable, while remaining forever learners and never arriving at truth—a rather busy sort of ignorance. Jannes and Jambres appear as the chapter’s old comparison: they opposed Moses, and the modern opponents of truth will not get much farther before their folly is visible.

The pattern held up against the stormvv. 10–17

The address turns from the dismal catalogue to the life already observed: teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, persecutions, and sufferings in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. The speaker says the Lord rescued him from all of them, though persecution remains the expected companion of godly life, while evil men and imposters worsen in both deception and self-deception. Against this stands what has been learned and believed, the Holy Scriptures known from infancy, and Scripture itself—God-breathed, useful for instruction, conviction, correction, and training—until the man of God is fully equipped for every good work.

  1. 2 Tim 3:1But understand this: In the last days terrible times will come.

  2. 2 Tim 3:2For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,

  3. 2 Tim 3:3unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good,

  4. 2 Tim 3:4traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

  5. 2 Tim 3:5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Turn away from such as these!

  6. 2 Tim 3:6They are the kind who worm their way into households and captivate vulnerable women who are weighed down with sins and led astray by various passions,

  7. 2 Tim 3:7who are always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.

  8. 2 Tim 3:8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth. They are depraved in mind and disqualified from the faith.

  9. 2 Tim 3:9But they will not advance much further. For just like Jannes and Jambres, their folly will be plain to everyone.

  10. 2 Tim 3:10You, however, have observed my teaching, my conduct, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my perseverance,

  11. 2 Tim 3:11my persecutions, and the sufferings that came upon me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.

  12. 2 Tim 3:12Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

  13. 2 Tim 3:13while evil men and imposters go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

  14. 2 Tim 3:14But as for you, continue in the things you have learned and firmly believed, since you know from whom you have learned them.

  15. 2 Tim 3:15From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  16. 2 Tim 3:16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

  17. 2 Tim 3:17so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work.
